A Day In The Park Date: Sat. July 18, 9am-5pm Description: Begin with an 8 x 12 wood base and end with swing handles for a striking basket you'll want to take with you wherever you go, on a picnic, to the beach or for shopping at the farmer's market. | Venie Hinson Venie has been designing and weaving since 1987. She holds a BFA from Kent State University (85) with special emphasis on fiber arts. Originally a loom weaver, she began exploring and improvising basket design and construction techniques in 1989 and teaching full time nationally since 2002. Her 2006-08 work features not only her signature marbling and double walled designs, but also black walnut and cherry overlays and spokes, pedestal bases, and vertical and horizontal curling techniques quite different from the traditional diagonal curling techniques. A 2001-02 grant recipient from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and 2005 grant recipient in Ohio, her work has also been featured in Basket Bits (a national basket magazine), on Fox TV (Cleveland) in 2004 as well as Cleveland Magazine and numerous northeast Ohio newspaper articles. |

Learn Venie's techniques for making beautiful marbled wood strips that you can later weave into your baskets or marble silk scarves which make great personal gifts in everyone's favorite colors.. August 22, 9am-5pm Description: Iroquois Treasures is FULL of great techniques, from a bundled base, to a 2/2 waling in regular/reverse weaves to create arrows around the basket, to twill patterning, to a lovely, unique pull and lash rim. No cut and tuck here! Made of natural and smoked reed, with a marbled strip to match, the form is reminiscent of Iroquois pottery. August 22, 9am-5pm Description: Begin with a rectangular bundled base, learn a great cats head technique to create a really squashy basket woven in chase weaves, add a marbled strip surrounded by broken arrow 2/2 waling (regular and reverse weaves using 4 weavers), top off with a uniquely ti-twined rim lashed waxed linen and studded with wooden beads, and youve got the makings for a beauty of a basket. Date: Sun. August 23, 9am-5pm Description: This basket will challenge and develop your shaping skills, but be worth the effort. Begin with a unique "twine and sew" round base, then chase weave and plain weave the sides. Finish off with side handles, and add an outside rim entirely made of seagrass. Add traditional curls, but with seagrass intertwined through the curls. Dimensions: 9" high x 15" dia. Date: Sun. August 23, 9am-5pm Description: The shape of this graceful basket is created by weaving over pre-shaped double spokes, cut from cherry. Sides are woven in a combination of chase and plain weave, with thin seagrass woven through paper-thin maple curls, creating the distinct undulating pattern on the sides of the basket and on the lid (inspired by an antique Indian basket). Learn a great way to form a center lid opening, perfect for pulling yarn ends through.
