Cherokee- Style Fruit Basket Pattern

Pattern by Dianne Stanton. While hunting through my American Indian basket books, I came across a photograph of a rectangular basket called a Cherokee fruit tray. This is a basic basket made elegant with the striking red and black Cherokee colors and two sets of curls that travel between the two wide natural rows. Both baskets can be made with the same spokes. The open basket is made with an even number of spokes in each direction; for the handled version, one of the long spokes becomes a short one. The open fruit basket measures: 13" long x 9" wide x 5 1/4" deep; the handled version: 12 1/2" long x 8" wide x 10" deep (including the handle).
